The objective of the Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing Department is to deliver high-quality education in Mental Health Nursing across Diploma, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate Nursing programs. It delivers Evidence-Based Nursing care tailored to the needs of mentally ill patients, emphasizing promotion, prevention, and rehabilitation. The department conducts research to promote mental health and prevent mental illness in individuals, families, and communities. The faculty and students collaborate with the multidisciplinary health team to carry out mental health promotional activities for the community. The department is committed to providing opportunities for the professional growth of the students and faculty.

The UG and PG students are posted in the psychiatric ward, OPD, De-addiction wards and KSHEMA Sandhya of Justice K.S. Hegde Hospital. Additionally, students have the opportunity to gain experience at the Nitte Rural Psychiatric Centre located in Karkala, Udupi District, Karnataka. Postgraduate students benefit from advanced clinical exposure at prestigious institutions such as the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). In addition, the postgraduate students undergo a one-week AYUSH posting at the Alvas College of Naturopathy & Yogic Sciences, Moodbidri.

  • Dr Nalini M presented the paper “Factors contributing to alcoholism among men in the selected de-addiction center, Mangalore” at the National Conference on “Advancing Health Care Through Informatics and Technology: Bridging Innovation and Patient Care” Organized by Theerthanker Mahaveer University, Theertanker Mahaveer College of Nursing Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh in collaboration with Glorious International Nursing Research and Academic, (GINRA) Foundation held between 20th – 22nd November 2023


The departmental faculty and students actively participate in community extension activities. The department observes world suicide prevention day, world Alzheimer's and world Mental health week every year to create awareness among the general public. The department also provides a Life skill training programme for freshers and NSS volunteers of the college.
