Course Description:

This certificate course is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and expertise for entry level employment in palliative care units. Caring a patient requiring palliative care involves various complex psychological, spiritual and ethical issues which creates a lot of stress among the nurses. So, this course for nurses is essential, as it prepares the nurses to handle such complex situations effectively.

Objectives:

At the end of the course the students will be able to -

  • appreciate the role of the nurse in providing and teaching families to deliver quality palliative care for patient.
  • demonstrate skills in communication in handling parents and patients requiring palliative care
  • describe various drugs used in palliative care
  • provide relief from pain and other distressing symptoms by using various non pharmacological methods
  • integrate the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
  • offer a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death
  • offer a support system to help the family cope during the patient’s illness and in their own bereavement
  • use a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counseling, if indicated
  • create positive influence in the course of illness by enhancing quality of life
  • affirm life and regards dying as a normal process
