Psychiatric Nursing

The department of Psychiatric nursing aims to impart quality education in the field of  Mental Health Nursing to Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Nursing students providing quality care in the areas of Preventive, Promotive, Curative and Rehabilitative aspects of Mental Health nursing.

Aims of Department:

  • Impart quality education in the field of mental health nursing to undergraduate and post graduate students
  • Provide Evidence Based Nursing care for mentally ill patients in the focus on Promotive, Preventive and Rehabilitative aspects.

Objectives of the Department:

  • Develop a positive attitude in the care of mentally ill patients
  • Develop a skill in history taking and Mental Status Examination
  • Develop communication skills
  • Give the highest quality of care by applying psychiatric nursing approach
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the multidisciplinary team in the hospital and in the community for the promotion of mental health
  • Create awareness about the problems of individuals at different developmental stages
  • Provide preventive, promotive and rehabilitative care to mentally ill client in the hospitals and in the community.

The students are exposed in the psychiatric ward of K.S.Hegde charitable hospital and supplemented with additional field experience by posting them to NIMHANS Bangalore, Sasihithulu and Rural psychiatric centre in Nitte, Karkala.

Extension Activities of the Department:
National Youth Day Celebration:2014

The department of Psychiatric Nursing, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences observed National Youth Day. On this occasion a seminar was organized on the topic “Each Soul is Potentially Devine”. The resource person was Srimat Swami Jitakamanandaji, President, Ramakrishna Math, Mangalore on 17.01.2014 at Seminar Hall, KSHEMA

He emphasized in his talk that each individual is filled with potentials and how to utilize in the betterment of the society. The total participants were 150 nursing students.


The world Alzheimer’s Day – SEP-2014 NUINS
The world Alzheimer’s day was observed by the department of Psychiatric Nursing in association with Snehanjali Prathishtaana Farangipete and Rotary Club Bantwala, Mangalore. On this occasion the department organized awareness program on the theme: “Can we reduce risk of Dementia”. The awareness program began at 10 am welcome note by Ms. Savitha, 2 years M.Sc Nursing. The significance of the day was explained by Mrs. Aruni.G lecturer. The students of 3 rd year B.Sc (N) enacted role play on symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The prevention part was discussed by Ms. Tincy Selma Thomas with the help of power point. They were around 150 people from Dharmastala Grama Abhivridhi Yojana were benefited .The audience doubts were cleared by Mr. Sukesh, Lecturer the department of Psychiatric Nursing. Mr. Krishna Poonja, managing trustee appreciated the department.

Observation of World Mental Health Week -2014

Observation of World Mental Health Week -2014 (From 7-10-2014 to 10-10-2014) The department of Psychiatric Nursing were collaborated with department of Psychiatry KSHEMA, Nitte Rural Psychiatric centre, Karkala, Nitte, Sevanjali Prathishtana Farangipete and Rotary Club Bantwala, Mangalore, Dharmastala Grama Abhivridhi Yojana,Mudipu, and Vinothana Youth Club Vitla for the Observation of World mental health Week -2014. On 7th the programme was inaugurated in Nitte Rural Rehabilitation Center, Nitte, Karkala. Sri .N. Vinay Hegde chancellor, Nitte University inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp. The significance of the mental health was emphasized by Dr. Sathish Rao HOD department of Psychiatry, KSHEMA. After the inaugural programme the role-play was enacted by the students on the theme “Living with Schizophrenia”. Total 1000 population from rural community of D.K District were benefited from this awareness programme.




School Mental Health Programme
Faculty and M.Sc Nursing and 3rd year B.Sc students from the department of Psychiatric Nursing Organized a school mental health programme on “personality Development” on17th January 2015 at High School Babbukatte under the guidance of Ms. Aruni G, Lecturer Department of Psychiatric Nursing.
